Cats & their Coats

Activity

  • Grade levels K-4th grade
  • Description: Students will view pictures, listen to sounds, and gather information from the National Geographic website to learn how the coats of big cats; lions, tigers, and leopards, help them survive in their habitats. Students then illustrate a coat for themselves that can help camouflage them in a chosen setting, and present their drawings explaining the patterns they chose and why they chose them.

Questions to ponder:

  • What habitat does this cat live in?
  • Does their coat help them camouflage?
  • In what situation would humans need to camoflauge?
  • What other functions do fur coats have for cats?

Instructions:

  • Materials Needed: Crayons, Drawing paper, Pencils
    • View the National Geographic photo gallery images of lions, tigers, and leopards.
    • What types of big cats are shown in the video.
    • Describe the specific physical characteristics of each cat, including the color and pattern of their different coats. How does the cat’s surroundings look, is there tall grass? dark trees?
    • Now that you know the function of the cat’s coats, can you create a coat for humans?
    • How will the human camouflage coat look?
    • How will it camouflage into human habitat?
    • Be creative and design a useful coat by drawing and adding color to it. Will your coat help you be a better swimmer? Be a faster runner? Or will it keep you cozy and warm in the winter?
