Activity 7: Earth’s Water: A Drop in your Cup

Have you ever wondered how much water on Earth is available to us in the form of fresh water? In this lesson we will talk about where fresh water exists on earth, sources that are available to us as drinking water, and ways we can conserve water in our own communities. We will also be looking at how water is distributed between sources. As a way to explore these concepts, we will be doing a demonstration of the water distribution on Earth on a scale that is more comprehensible to us as humans.

Activities:

  • Students will be given a materials list and encouraged to follow along with the demonstration. This demonstration includes using containers measured out in Liters and Milliliters to demonstrate how water on Earth is distributed amongst sources and what that looks like on a scale that is much more tangible to us. The materials used in this experiment are easily accessible at home.
  • After the experiment is complete, students will be asked to make observations about what they saw.
