Activity 11: What Do Rocks Tell Us About Earth’s History

Have you ever wondered how fossils and rock layers work together to tell us about past organisms? In this lesson we will learn how we can use rock layers to help us identity index fossils. You will also learn the 3 criteria needed for a fossil to be an index fossil!

Students will play a game and be able to order the rock layers according to the fossils. The fossils are their context clues to help them sort them correctly. Some fossils may be index fossils while others are not. There are 3 game levels. Each level is more complex and has fewer context clues. Have fun being a paleontologist.
